Tourist guide Guyana (South America)

Guyana is a small country in the North-East of South America, on the Atlantic coast, having common borders with Brazil, Venezuela and Surinam. The indigenous etymology of the name means “Country with the abundant rivers”, which is justified by the 1.600 kilometers of navigable roads which traverse the country and which is used mainly with transport as invaluable wood.

Geography: most of the population lives the narrow coastal part of the country. The back country is characterized by impenetrable large valleys and tropical forests. In the extreme west, draws up the Plate of Guyannes which gave its name to the country and constitutes a natural border with Brazil and Venezuela.

Relief and river: more the high summit of the country, the Roraima Mount, is drawn up at an altitude of 2.810m in the solid mass of Tepuy, close to the borders with Brazil and Venezuela. Longest of the innumerable rivers of the country, Essequibo is stretched on 1.040 km. It takes its source in the Acarei Mounts, close to the border with Brazil and is thrown in the Atlantic Ocean.

Climate and period of voyage advised: it reigns in Guyana a hot and wet tropical climate, a very strong water content and average temperatures turning around the 28°C. Guyana undergoes two rain seasons, one relatively short between November and December and other longer between May and August during which it falls from the pouring rain which transforms the roads not tarred inside the country into muddy tracks. To find temperatures and a climate more pleasant, it is necessary to remain on the coast or to go in the areas in altitude. The best period to go to Guyana is thus between September and November because it is in fact the only at which time it does not rain.

Official languages and spoken languages: the official language is English, but Guyana presenting a strongly multiethnic population, each ethnicity speaks its own language. The majority language, spoken by 75% about the population is the Guianese Creole. The largest majority of the population having immigrant of the Indian sub-continent, a strong part of the population still speaks the Hindi, the Urdu one, and other Indo-European languages. With that are added the indigenous populations which they also, according to their area of origin speak ten languages and dialects different.

Health and vaccinations: generally one advises with the travellers to be made vaccinate against hepatitis has, typhus, the polio, the diphteria and tetanus. To prevent the viral diseases transmitted by the insects and the mosquitos, it is in general enough to cover well and apply products anti-insects. Guyana belongs to the territories infected by the yellow fever. The vaccine is thus obligatory there for any person wishing to go on the Guianese ground. The vaccine must be made at least ten days before the departure and remains active ten years. On the Atlantic coast, the risk to contract paludism exists, but it is rather weak. On the other hand, inside the grounds, the risk is raised more, and that throughout the year. It would be thus advisable to consult a doctor before your departure in order to define a preventive strategy. The health system is unfortunately satisfactory only in the big cities. Moreover, the treatments are in general rather expensive and it will be asked to you to regulate them in advance. In Georgetown, the capital, it is possible to be made look after free in the municipal hospitals, with the help of a gift. It nevertheless is advised to contract a insurance-voyage including/understanding a insurance-repatriation for the most serious cases. For more safety and to avoid risks of infection, it is recommended to consume only bottled water, to peel the fruits well and to make cook vegetables before consuming them. Lastly, think of providing you with a first-aid kit of voyage.

Conditions of entry on the territory: for the French nationals and one duration of stay lower than 90 days, a valid passport for one duration of at least six months is enough. Obtaining a visa is not necessary. The minor travellers must be provided with an individual passport. In addition, like already mentioned in the heading “Health and vaccinations”, vaccination against the yellow fever is obligatory for any person of more than 10 months.
For further information concerning vaccinations, the conditions of entry and the security instructions, you can, for example, to consult the site of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Travel and transport: some companies propose flights of Paris (CDG) towards the international airport of Georgetown (GEO), but at the present time, there do not exist direct flights. One can quote Air France (AF), Delta Airlines (DLL) or LIAT (LI).
For the interior flights, which often constitute during the rain season the only reliable means of transport, the airline company Trans Guyana Airways (TGY) offers connections towards Bemichi (BCG), Imbaimadai (IMB), Karasabai (KRG), Mahdia (MHA), Mabaruma (USI) or Ogle (OGL).

The capital: Georgetown, often called “the city-garden of the Caribbean”, rests on the estuary of the Demerara river on the Atlantic Ocean. If one takes into account all the agglomeration of the port city, the city shelters nearly 140.000 inhabitants. The city has a charm very influenced by the Dutch colonial style, in particular because of its houses on pile of the 18th century and of its ditches bordered of trees which bring a shade bienfaitrice. The Cathedral George Saint, built very out of wood and a 45 m height and the picturesque Stabroek market on which one can, in addition to the food products, to acquire silver and gold jewels for a moderate price, deserve a visit. Close to the downtown area, one can walk and slacken in the municipal botanical garden which extends on 40 hectares. The visitors amateurs of culture should go to the new arts center because it with the reputation to produce the best plays of all the Caribbean one. The national museum also makes it possible to be familiarized with the culture and the natural history of the country.

Tourist sites and places of bathe: compared to its neighbor, Guyana has relatively few beaches favourable with the bathe. The holiday makers who dream of splendid exotic beaches which invite to idleness and with the relaxation should rather go on the islands close to Barbados and Tobago. The beauty of Guyana is discovered much more while penetrating towards the interior of the grounds, covered with more than 80% with luxuriant tropical vegetation. This forest shelters moreover one fauna and a flora of a variety and a richness without equal on the South American continent. The town of Bartica, located at the junction of the two large rivers Essequibo and Mazaruni constitutes a good starting point to start a tour towards the falls of Kaieteur which count among most beautiful and most majestic of the American continent, after the falls of the Niagara and those of Iguacu. They are located on Rio Potaro and fall from an impressive height of 226 Mr. In the south-west of the country, one can go in the savanna of Rupununi to visit to Amerindian indigenous tribes still living in the area. For that it will be necessary for you to ask for the assistance of a local tourist agency, because, for this type of tourism, it is necessary to obtain authorizations near the ministries for the interior and that can sometimes take months.

Religion: the Christians form the greatest religious community of the country since they account for approximately 50% of the population. There exists also a great community of Hindus, approximately 40% of the population and a relatively small Muslim community of 10%.

Big cities and possibilities of lodging: Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam and Corriverton
