Argentinian tourist guide (South America)

Argentina is, from its size, the second country of South America. It is frontier, in North, of Bolivia and Paraguay, in the East of Brazil, of Uruguay, in the West of Chile and is bordered, in the East, by the Atlantic Ocean and in the South by the sea of the south pole. North in the South, the country 3700 km is long and of the West in the East of approximately 1400 km.

Geography: Argentina is divided into 4 different geographical areas. The area of Gran Chaco, at the border with Uruguay, is made up of wood and marsh. Then it there in the Andes cordillera, plains of the Pampa and Patagonie. Lastly, all in the South, extends the ground from fire.

Mountains and rivers: More than 30% of the grounds are mountainous. The Andes Argentinas form a natural border with Chile. With its 6.960 meters, the Aconcagua mount is the culminating point of Americas. As for Ojos del Salado, it is, with its 6.880 meters, the most volcano of the world. The most important rivers are, in the West, Paraná and Uruguay, which meet to form Río of Plata which will finish its race in the Atlantic Ocean. The largest lake is Laguna Mar Chiquita, a very flat salted lake of which entire surface is of 5770 km ².

Climate and advised season: The very variable climate in Argentina is explained by the fact that the country extends from the tropic of Capricorn in the Antarctic and also by the enormous differences in altitude of Is in West, between the Andes which rise with 7000 meters of altitude to the territories which are located at the level of the Atlantic Ocean. In the South of Argentina, in Patagonie, the temperatures are rather cold, in North, in the subtropic of Gran Chaco, and in the Pampa, the climate is moderate. In certain areas, the dryness reigns, in others on the other hand, precipitations are frequent and abundant. As a whole, one can say that the best moment to travel is located between November and May, since the seasons in Argentina are approximately the reverse of those which one finds in Europe.

Language (S) of the country and communication: The spoken language and official language are the Spaniard. However, one also leaves oneself there very well with the English since this language is very widespread among the inhabitants. In certain areas of Argentina, it can even happen that one includes/understands the French, the German or the Italian.

Health and vaccines: It is in general recommended to be vaccinated against hepatitis has, typhus, the polio, the diphteria and tetanus. To protect itself from the viruses propagated by the mosquitos and the insects, it is enough most of the time to wear covering clothing and to use insecticides sold on the spot. There exists also a light risk of Malaria in the rural regions of North, at the border with Bolivia. Before leaving, please inform itself near your attending physician in connection with a possible preventive medication of the malaria (paludism). Care of quality is ensured in the majority of the big cities. It is recommended to provide itself with a special health insurance for the voyages with insurance-repatriation in the event of urgency, since the stay in an institute of care and the care themselves must be regulated immediately and in liquid. Apart from that, it is recommended to peel the fruits and to cook vegetables in order to avoid any risk of infection. It is also judicious to carry a small first-aid kit with the necessary one.

Conditions of entry: A valid passport is required. It must be valid still 6 months after being left Argentina. For the moment, no tourist visa is required for the travellers originating in France, of Belgium, of Switzerland, of Germany and Canada, and whose stay does not exceed 3 months. It is rather complicated to prolong this 3 months on the spot authorization. It is then necessary to leave the territory, while going to Uruguay for example. The minors must be provided with an individual passport.

Arrival and continuation of the voyage: there exist non-stop flights towards Buenos Aires (EZE) starting from Madrid (MAD), in particular with the national company Aerolineas Argentinas (AR) or the Spanish private company Air Europa (UX). It is also interesting to travel with Air France (AF) from Paris (BY), there too without stopovers. As regards the interior flights, there are some towards Bahia Blanca (BHI), Cordoba (HORN), Mar del Plata (MDQ) or Ushuaia (USH). These destinations inter alia are served by Aerolinas Argentinas or its subsidiary company Austral Air (AU), starting from the airport specialized in the interior flights Aeroparque Jorge Newbury (AEP) in Buenos Aires.

Capital: The big cities of Argentina, and especially Buenos Aires, have a very European air. That is especially explained by the fact why many immigrants from Europe settled there at last century. Buenos Aires has many architectural treasures dating from the colonial time. The majority of the monuments of the city are located in a radius of 5 km ². One can recommend inter alia the church of San Ignacio de Loyola, which is also the colonial building oldest, going back to 1710. There is also Palacio de Congreso, a splendid building of neo-classic style, the pink presidential palace of color called Casa Rosada, Teatro Colón which is also the largest theater of Argentina east which was built about 1900 in a style néo-baroque, and many the other museums and monuments. If Buenos Aires attracts visitors more and more, it is without any doubt also thanks to its Milongas, evenings dedicated to the Argentino Tango.

Places of interest and bathe: In North, one will recommend especially the town of Salta. It is located at the foot of the mount San Bernardo which culminates with 1.450 meters of altitude. It is one of the most beautiful towns of Argentina. The top of the mountain offers a unspoilable view and you can reach it feet or out of funicular. In Salta, you will appreciate especially the many cathedrals, particularly that of Iglesia San Francisco, which one says that it has the most bell-tower of Latin America and who is also the symbol of the city. It is also in North, at the Brazilian border, that the spectacular falls of Iguaçu are, that it is necessary to visit, if you can it, between October and July, the temperatures and ambient moisture being then less oppressive.
The Andes offer many national parks which have a whole a very rich fauna. One of the most popular national parks is located close to San Carlos de Bairloche. This city, of very European appearance, is located in a very picturesque way at the foot of the mountains, at the edge of a big lake with the turquoise color. This privileged situation allows many excursions starting from the city, for example, the rise of the mount Cerro Colorado, which culminates with 2.130 meters of altitude.
As regards the bathes, Argentina is not in remainder. One thinks then particularly of the long Atlantic coast. The seaside resort most known being that of Mar de Plata with its long and splendid sand beaches end. These last years, of many new vacation resorts to the modern architecture made their appearance. They are especially appreciated populations autochtones which spend there readily their holidays.
Religion: More than 90% of the population is of Christian confession. There exists also a Jewish minority and a rather important Moslem minority.

Big cities: Cordoba, Rosario, Mendoza, Plata, Salta, San Juan, Santa Fe.
