Tadjikistan is the smallest country of Central Asia. It has common borders with Afghanistan, China, Kirghizstan and Ouzbékistan. It draws its name from Turkish “tasi” which means “Moslem” although the inhabitants of Tajik are not Turkish people but Persian people.
Geography: more than 93% of the territory inhabitant of Tajik are occupied by mountains including one great part belong to the Pamir mountains, in the east of the country, which counts among highest of the world and of which more half exceed the altitude of 3.000 m above the sea. In the north of the country, the solid mass of Alai is drawn up close to the border with Kirghizstan. All these mountainous solid masses are old several million years and are the result of still active tectonic movements today and which, constantly can cause seisms of a variable amplitude. The area of the valley of Ferghana constitutes the most fertile part of the territory and is largely exploited for agriculture.
