Tourist guide Nepal (Asia)

The Kingdom of Nepal is in South Asia and has common borders with China, India and Tibet.

Geography and climate: on the geographical level, one can divide Nepal into three great areas. In the south, an area of plain located in the valley of Gange, Teraï, in the center a more undulating area and finally a mountainous region where some of the more high summits of the world are. The area of Teraï, at the border with India, has a tropical or subtropical climate very pleasant and enjoys a very fertile ground. It is the area which with the strongest demographic density since on a surface accounting for 17% of the surface of the country approximately 50% of the total population of the country reside. In the central part, the demographic density varies according to the local fertility and from the climate. Here 45% of the population populate 30% of the surface of the country. The climate is mainly subtropical there. The area of the mountains in which the eights plus high summits of the world rise, is most sterile and most inhospitable. The rain season is so intense there that it makes impossible any agriculture. This is why the local population draws the largest part of its incomes from tourism. The climate is alpine or Arctic there. In the absence of asphalt roads, the interior flights often represent the only alternative to join these moved back areas.

Relief and river: More the high summit of Nepal, also more the high summit of the world is the Mount Everest which culminates with a height of 8.850 m and fact part of the solid mass of the Himalayas, located at the border with Tibet. Its Nepalese name “Sagamatha” means “Mother of the universe”. The longest river is Kâlî Gandakî and more the big lake is the lake Pangong.

Official languages and spoken languages: the official language is the Nepalese, but the Nepal has a great linguistic diversity since 14 languages there are spoken, subdivided in 30 dialects. Fortunately, in the valley of Katmandou and the great tourist centers, English is spoken, in particular by the tradesmen and the people living of tourism, as well as other languages among which French.

Health and vaccinations: generally one advises with the travellers to be made vaccinate against hepatitis has, typhus, the polio, the diphteria and tetanus. To prevent the viral diseases transmitted by the insects and the mosquitos, it is in general enough to cover well and apply products anti-insects. The risk to catch the Malaria exists mainly in the valley of Teraï. It would be advisable to consult a doctor before the departure in order to define a preventive strategy. It is advisable not to underestimate the disease risks either related to altitude. In particular, it is recommended not to hesitate to turn back when at altitudes of more than 3.500 m, symptoms such as vomiting, breathing difficulties or headaches appear. At these altitudes, it is not rare that the helps arrive too late. The equipment of health is satisfactory only in the valley of Katmandou.
It is advised to contract a insurance-voyage including/understanding a insurance-repatriation for the most serious cases. The trekkers, the mountaineers and the rafters should think of contracting an insurance including/understanding of the helps in the helicopter. For more safety and to avoid risks of infection, it is recommended to peel the fruits well and to make cook vegetables before consuming them. Lastly, to think of providing itself with small limps with pharmacy of voyage.

Voyages and transport: unfortunately, so far of Europe, no company proposes direct flights bound for Katmandou (KTM). All the flights in departure of Europe make at least a stopover, in general in an Arab country such as Dubai (DXB) or in an Asian airport such as Bangkok (BKK). For the interior flights, the national company Royal Nepal Airlines (RA) proposes several destinations such as Bhairawa (BWA), Biratnagar (BIR) or Pokhara (PKR) which make it possible during the flight to admire the single and attractive mountainous landscapes of Nepal.

The capital: The capital of Nepal, Katmandou is a very beautiful city, very picturesque, located in a valley at an altitude of 1.350 m, surrounded by mountains having the altitudes ranging between 2.000 m and 2.700 Mr. the geographical location of the city, it was during centuries practically accessible only to foot, allowed him relatively to be protected from the external influences. It is only during the 60 last years that road transport between the city and the adjoining country, India, developed. The city is really the economic, political and cultural center of the country. It is also by far the greatest agglomeration. It gathers all the national and foreign institutions. Many Hindu temples and Buddhist stûpas, as well as preserved architecture make a true museum in sport of it. Katmandou was in the past one of the three royal cities of the valley, the two others being Patan and Bhaktapur and was registered with the world heritage by UNESCO in 1979. The tourist center of the city gathers around the Basantur Place and of Durbare Square. In a restricted perimeter one can admire a multitude of temples and palate. The place was entirely restored by UNESCO between 1972 and 1975 at the time of the rise on the throne of king Birenda. Among the buildings deserving a visit, one can quote the royal palace, the Trailokya-Mohan temple, set up in 1680, the Seto-Machhendranath temple which are as well used as place of worship to the Buddhists as to the Hindus, the temple Shiva Parvati, the Basantapur tower, and the small artificial lake of Rani Pokhri with in his center the temple painted in white of Shiva and the house of the alive goddess Kumari. Kumaris represent a single Nepalese tradition. They are regarded as being the reincarnations of the Taleju goddess. They are selected towards the three years age, and generally the poorest layers of the company. They must show precise physical characteristics and be subjected to the immutable ritual ones. Once elected, and that until its puberty, the Kumari young person must reside in the house of Kumaris and receive the blessing of its faithful several times per days. The king himself must present himself in front of the Kumari young person to receive from it the blessing which confers a divine gasoline capacity to him. The protective goddess must remain sitted in a moved back part of the temple and appear some times at the window to be made admire curious tourists. The photographs are of course prohibited and the temple is open only to the Hindu believers. Kumari leaves the temple only with very rare recoveries, at the time of traditional festivals for which its presence is necessary. For its displacements, they is placed in a sedan-chair. For these occasions, it carries a rich person gilded costume and is avoided the face of a third œ he.
Because of its situation boxed by high mountains, the valley of Katmandou is very affected by the pollution caused by the industrialization of the city and that in spite of its statute of protected city. In all the valley, the damaged houses are replaced by concrete constructions which disfigure this splendid area. It is to be feared that from here a few years, Katmandou and its valley will have lost much of their current charm.

To approximately 200 km in the west of the capital, the city rests at an altitude of 885 m in a fertile valley surrounded by seven lakes. Until 1968, the city was accessible only to foot. Today, Pokhara became the residence of summer of the Nepalese king and is an animated city, tourist whose old city reflects the Nepalese traditional culture accurately. However, it is not so much the old city which attracts the tourists, but rather surrounding nature, of a beauty to cut the breath, in particular when one climbs the 1600 m of the Sarangkot mount which is to approximately 9 km in the west of the city to admire the panoramic sight on the solid mass of Annapurna.
The small town of Panauti makes it possible to admire good examples of the Nepalese traditional craft industry. One finds there dwellings with the doors and the carved windows, some pagodas on several floors and an old city with narrow lanes dating from the Middle Ages.
The amateurs of fauna can visit the national park of Chitwan in the south of the country, not far from the border with India, which with its 1.000 km ² is the last vestige of jungle of the country.
